“We’re very happy with Cisco and its business partners,” says Emerson. “The level of support from the Cisco team in New Mexico has been wonderful. I knew that if we had any kind of problem with this system, it would get resolved quickly and correctly. Support is what keeps the system running, so support like that is even more important than the cost of a system."

— Robert R. Emerson, Director of Technology, Farmington Municipal Schools

New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) celebrates its distinctive Hispanic and Native American heritage while connecting students across the state to rich learning experiences that prepare them for opportunities in today’s world. Building these connections, however, required replacing three separate legacy network infrastructures. Over the years, NMHU had created separate networks to support data transport, videoconferencing capabilities, and campus telephone services. Various network switches, a private branch exchange (PBX), telephones, and computers were connected via “thin” Ethernet cable and traditional copper wire. Application performance was painfully slow. Farmington Municipal Schools using IP Telephony to improve communication district-wide.

By replacing its 26 separate phone systems with a Cisco IP telephony solution, this New Mexico school district has improved communication—both internally and with the community—and reduced its operating costs in the process.

Farmington Municipal Schools, in the scenic Four Corners area of New Mexico, serves 10,200 students at 18 schools. Until recently, each of the district’s school sites and administrative buildings had a different phone system. “We had an array of systems of varying ages and the district used an outside vendor for all the maintenance,” says Robert Emerson, the school district’s director of technology. By adding IP telephony to the district’s existing wide area network, Emerson has been able to create a single, centralized, and easy-to-maintain phone system with convenient features for everyone
